How to Give a Film Look to Your Videos in Sony Vegas

Today I’m gonna show you how you can give a film look to your videos in Sony Vegas. We’ll take a video shot on mobile phone or camera and try to make it look like a movie in three steps.

First step is crop. As you know, almost all the Hollywood movies are shot in super widescreen and that’s why they have those black bars at the top and bottom. So, we’ll use crop to get those black bars in our video. So, just click on the ‘Event pan/crop’ icon on the video track and make sure that ‘Size About Center’ is selected on left side of the panel. Then just drag the video from top or bottom (as shown in the picture). You will see the black bars on the top and bottom of the video. After you get the satisfactory size of the black bars, just close the window.

Second step is color correction. Just go to video effects tab and find ‘color corrector’. In color corrector, select ‘Default’ and drag it on to the video track. Then go to presets and you’ll find various options such as ‘Red Midtones’, ‘Green Midtones’, ‘Red Highlight’. Here, you’ll have to decide, which preset will suit your video. So, select each of them one by one and decide what works for you. Usually, ‘Red Midtones’ or ‘Red Highlight’ suits the best.

Third step is Color Curves. In this step, just go to ‘video fx’ tab and find ‘Color Curves’. Again, Drag and drop the ‘Default’ on to your video track. You’ll see a new window pop up in which all you have to do move the handle on the top of the line a little bit up and the handle on the bottom of the line, a little bit down (as shown in the image).
After that, you can just render your video by clicking on 'Render As'.
